What is placemaking to you and your organisation?

I’m Camilla Mankabady, communications
director, Liverpool City Council. Placemaking for me is bringing character
and identity to a location. I’m blessed to come from Liverpool which has got,
what I think is, a really colourful, complicated character. And for me and my team it’s about bringing a holistic message about the city, putting the
people at the heart of what we do. That’s what real place making is. I think it’s about, place making for us at Durham, is about making sure that we tell a really
good story. And make it care what it’s about in its entirety. Making a really
good message that involves all the people that are involved in that. From
all the different areas of business whether that’s a small business or a
large business, across lots of different sectors. And sometimes that means
challenging the misconceptions and making sort of surprises really. Making
people sort of appreciate some of the bigger picture, but it’s also some of the
smaller things that happen. The more day-to-day, that really build a big
picture of what the place is all about. So place branding for Medway is very
important, but we can really summarise it into one sentence. It is not the
marketing and communication department’s plays branding, it is the community
branding. It belongs to everybody. It is the same story being told by different
people and different audiences.
