Latin American Culture with Enrique Tames

Latin America is such an interesting place,
the history, the politics, the myths, and the present problems related to different
levels of development of the population. Over-population in the cities, disappointing governments,
corruption, drug trafficking, immigration, environmental destruction make it easy to
misunderstand. Even with all the focus on these problems, they are practically the only
things we ever read about. There is a consistently high expectation that Latin America will become
a dominant force in the world in the 21st century. I want us to study Latin America
so that we can come to a better understanding of what the future may hold based on analyzing
its past and present. The fascinating histories of the countries and their struggle for independence
from European powers. The role of both the European and the indigenous people in the
creation of the modern state. The ongoing difficult relation with the United States.
The powerful influence of African cultures in the development of our identities. What
has been the role of art and culture in all of this, and what is the role of art and culture
today? How is what we are saying and what we are doing truly reflective of who we are
and who we will be? How can we realize our potential? Work with me to analyze Latin American
cultural history, to develop a better understanding of Latin America, its strengths and its weaknesses
and where we should be from here.
