Introduction to Western Civilization II

Welcome to the Modern States course in Western Civilization II. My name is Dr. Robert
Clemm, and I am currently with the Department of
History at Grove City College and teach online at Southern
New Hampshire University. The aim of this course is to prepare you for the CLEP exam in
Western Civilization II. These lectures along
with your own hard work involving readings and
interactive materials and practice questions are
designed to help put you in the best position to succeed. I know you are trying to work
hard to earn college credit, and I hope I can help
you achieve your goal. Western Civilization II is, in many ways, the story of the development
of the world we live in today. In our course, we will
cover massive changes in Western civilization, ranging from the Enlightenment
and the Industrial Revolution to the emergence of flappers
and the invention of the pill. In the end, however, this course is designed
to be foundational. The hope is that you
will gain college credit, which will enable you to dive into deeper and more sophisticated coursework in this and other fields of study. The material covered
consists of 12 modules, consisting of a variable amount
of lectures for each topic. Depending on your background,
you may find it necessary to watch the lectures multiple times and engage with the recommended
readings very intensely. I look forward to seeing you again, as we tackle the origins of
state formation in module one.
