ASLI KULANE: Global Health is a new
field within public health sciences that integrates knowledge from other
fields such as epidemiology, medicine, economics, and behavioral sciences. My name is Asli Kulane, and
I’m an associate professor in international health
at Karolinska Institutet. Introduction to global
health is a basic course that aims at describing and analyzing
the variations in health that exist between countries
and within countries. In order to understand the
current health and development status of countries,
and how this relates to the trends in politics,
wars, and epidemics, we will be utilizing a
software called Gapminder. Gapminder is a tool that visually
displays health and development data over time. And it converts statistics into
attractive, comprehensible, moving charts. This course will specifically
address the current global health challenges in maternal and child
health, in sexual reproductive health and rights, and we will discuss the
major infectious diseases including malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV,
as well as the emerging challenges of non communicable
diseases and injuries. It’s very important to understand
how the health system is organized and financed, how
health policy decisions are taken in low and
middle income countries. We will emphasize the importance role
of cross-cutting issues such as gender and equity. The lecturers that will
contribute to this course are internationally known
global health experts coming from different
parts of the world. In addition, the course
is open to participants from different parts of the world. And we hope that creates an
intercultural learning environment that allows constructive participation
as an individual and in a group. Join us.
