English Literature and Creative Writing – Sarah Ismail

I was always a very keen reader from quite a
young age. English was always my best subject in school. When I first started university
I just wanted to kind of, qualify and have my degree. The thing that really turned it
around was the fact that my tutors were so willing to help. They were so, so friendly
and they really helped me in every way that they could. On the course itself we read a multitude of
books which is great if you’re a literature enthusiast. Anything from Shakespeare and
Marlow, to Virginia Wolfe, James Joyce, it’s really a huge range. I’m also a student
ambassador, I am a course rep, and I have been involved with the Huddersfield Literature
Festival. I did my work placement in Bradford Magistrates
Court as a support worker. The placement was very informative. It helped put me in touch
with key people within the legal field. It helped me to recognise that that was the environment
that I wanted to work in and it really increased my confidence. If I had my time at Huddersfield again, I
would definitely choose English Literature as my undergraduate degree because it’s
helped me to develop both academically and as a person. I am definitely more well read,
and I’ve just really enjoyed it.
