I really enjoyed being a firefighter, but I wanted to do something different. I wanted to grow in my job, and I thought the EMS was a good way to go with that. I found the biggest advantage at Hawkeye is the flexibility that it has. I have a full-time job I have a family, so being able to go to school still and get where I need to be as well as being able to still spend time with my family and support my family has been tremendous for me. Unique things about Hawkeye Community College’s EMS program, is there’s great clinical opportunities. Waterloo has two hospitals that service a wide area. You get a lot of good experience there. Waterloo Fire Rescue has some of the busiest ambulances in the state, and you’ll go there and learn from them. I like the ability to do real hands-on work, getting again to work with patients in the hospital setting as well as being able to work in the simulator lab, so that ability to find out where you went wrong in the simulator labs so that you can make the difference in the real world. Most of the instructors at Hawkeye are full-time paramedics, full-time EMS professionals. They teach here because they enjoy teaching. I would recommend this program. It is a wonderful program. It’s not too long, it’s not too short, it gives the ability to ask questions, and the instructors ensure that you’re learning the program. Director takes a hands-on approach to making sure that the students are getting what they need. I would definitely recommend it. Thanks to Hawkeye I was able to further my career and I really enjoy doing what I do.
